... is a former name of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
The ASA (or at least the abbreviation of its name) is best known outside the USA through its standards relating to photographic film speeds – which were superseded in the 1980s by those of the International Standards Organisation (ISO).
ANSI was founded in 1918 as the American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC). In 1928, the AESC became the ASA; in 1966 it became United States of America Standards Institute (USASI). The present name was adopted in 1969.
